R and R Tavern 47 Lo Su St., Hanoi - Tel: (84-4) 9344109
What does R and R Tavern stand for? Is it "rest and recreation", (term used by American troops in the war), or is it short for rock and roll? Well, both. This American-managed bar in Hanoi's Old Quarter is a walk on the wild side.
Recently celebrating its seventh anniversary, this welcoming bar is like a blast from the past, with veterans popping in and '60's rock music belting out (the impressive CD collection includes around a 100 Grateful Dead CD's!) More importantly, R and R Tavern is evolving as a foremost live rock music venue in Hanoi, something that has been sorely lacking. On Friday after 8pm, in-house band White Eagles perform live. In fact, R and R is fast becoming the place for ex-pats to meet up on Friday nights, with its excellent live music, a chance to dance and unwind and impromptu partly atmosphere. Occasionally on Sunday nights, other rock bands perform live and Wednesday nights are a showcase for newly-emerging bands. Adding a touch of refinement on Thursdays, the Thang Long String Quartet performs classical music.
Bar food (with delivery service) includes a decent Tex-Mex selection, including facos and burritos (VND 20,000), chicken or steak quesadillas (VND 80,000), or nachos (VND 40,000 - 60,000). An American bar, naturally on the menu are burgers (VND 10,000 - 62,000) and hot dogs (VND 20,000 - 38,000), with a choice of local or Australian-imported beef. Other dishes include fish and chips (VND 30,000 - 50,000) and spicy chicken wings. Try the margheritas and cold beer; happy hour 5:30 -6:30pm, Fridays 5:30-9pm.
